If you want to visit India for tourism, a short-term business meeting or trip, an urgent medical treatment, or transiting, then an Indian eVisa is the perfect option for you. 

On the other hand, if the purpose of your travel to the country is different, like working in the country or living long-term, then you will need a regular Indian visa through the Indian Embassy.

The Five Indian eVisa Categories

To make the application process simple, quicker, and efficient, the Indian government offers 5 different types of eVisas, according to your reason for traveling to India. Tourist eVisa

Business eVisa

If you’re visiting India to attend a business meeting, a conference, a business event, or any such activity, you require a business visa. This eVisa is valid for 12 months and allows you to stay in India for up to 180 days.

Medical eVisa

India offers urgent medical treatment to travel. If you require emergency treatment in India, you must apply for a medical eVisa. The Indian medical eVisa is applicable for 60 days only, but you are allowed to enter India three times within this period.

Medical Attendant eVisa

Every patient with a medical eVisa is allowed to travel with two medical attendants. If you are one of these medical attendants, you need to apply for this Indian eVisa just like the medical eVisa. The visa is applicable for 60 days, during which you can enter India three times.

Transit eVisa

If you’re transiting India to go to another destination and want to quickly explore India before moving on to the next country for a transit visa. Remember that you only need the eVisa if you are heading out of the airport or seaport your transit from. If you have no intentions to leave these areas, you don’t need to apply for any eVisa.

Important Documents You Must Have to Get an eVisa

Passport

You should have a passport that is applicable for six or more months from the entry date in India. In addition to this, it should have two unused pages that will be used for stamp purposes. You must also be aware that you can only apply for an Indian visa with a regular or standard passport. A diplomatic passport is not allowed to apply for an Indian eVisa.

Photograph

Email Address

When applying for an eVisa, you must provide your email address. It’s essential that you’re able to access your emails at any point in time. Credit/Debit Card

When applying for an Indian eVisa, you also need to pay an online visa fee. There may be various payment modes available to you to make this payment, but all sites offer the option of credit or debit card. So keep them with you.

Return Ticket

Return ticket to your own country or to some other country, which serves as proof that you are not planning to overstay your eVisa limit.

Financial Proof

You also need to show proof that you have adequate money to cover your expenses during your stay in India. You can use your last three bank statements for this.

Medical eVisa: You will need a letter from the hospital where you’re planning to get treatment.

Business eVisa: You need a letter and the business card of the organization you’re doing business with.

Processing Time of Your Indian eVisa Application

Generally, the Indian eVisa applications are processed within 3 to 4 business days. But if there is any mistake found in your application, it can lead to a delay in the application. This is why you need to cross-check everything before submitting the form. 

It is also advised to apply for your Indian eVisa about one week before your planned visit to the country if there are any delays. It doesn’t affect your plan.

Other Important Information

  • Do not overstay your Indian eVisa limit or you can face serious consequences like costly fines and be banned from entering the country again.
  • An eVisa does not allow you to apply for a university degree program. You need a standard visa for that.
  • With an eVisa, you cannot work in India as an employee. For that, you need a standard work visa.
  • You cannot enter a military installation or cantonment area with an Indian eVisa. Get special permission from the Indian government for this.
