eTA Canada for South Korean Citizens

South Korean nationals can use the Canadian eTA.

Holders of South Korean passports are eligible for visa-free travel to Canada. This indicates that they can enter Canada without a visa.

Canada has substituted the Electronic Travel Authorization (Canadian online eTA) for the visa. The eTA makes it simpler for South Koreans to go to Canada and enables Canadian officials to pre-screen overseas visitors.

The Canada Electronic Travel Authorization can only be obtained by air travelers entering Canada.

Do South Koreans Require a Visa or Travel Permit for Canada?

The only South Korean citizens who must visit a Canadian embassy to obtain another type of visa using a current passport are those who hold a temporary passport, are residents but not citizens, or have refugee status.

South Korea is exempt from the standard visa requirements imposed by Canada. For the Canada eTA, South Koreans with full citizenship are eligible.

In order to evaluate the suitability of international visitors to Canada and streamline the eTA application process, Canadian immigration started using the eTA in 2015.

The eTA is designed for South Korean nationals who are visiting Canada for the following reasons:

  • Tourism – brief tourist stays
  • Business purposes
  • Transiting through Canada to another destination
  • Consultation or Medical care

Most foreigners passing through Canada in transit require a visa in order to enter and depart the country. However, as long as they enter and exit through a Canadian airport, Korean nationals with the eTA are permitted to transit without a visa.

The South Korean national’s Canada eTA is not a work permit and does not grant residency status in Canada.

Travelers must possess a machine-readable electronic passport because the Canadian immigration computer system stores information on the eTA. Travelers who are hesitant may check with the Korean passport officials before submitting their application. South Korean passports are often machine-readable.

Canadian eTA Requirements for Citizens of South Korea

The Canada eTA application process has a number of prerequisites. Each applicant must possess:

  • A passport from South Korea that is at least six months old as of the date of trip.
  • A legitimate credit card or debit card to cover the charge.
  • An email address for receiving the eTA.

Holders of dual citizenship must apply for an eTA with the same passport they want to travel with because the eTA for South Korean citizens is electronically connected to the traveler’s passport.

All applicants must be older than 18 at the time of application, which is one of the eTA requirements for South Koreans. Those who are not yet 18 years old or older must have a parent or guardian apply on their behalf. Those requesting an eTA must also supply some basic personal information about their parents or guardians in addition to the application.

Travelers may enter Canada more than once throughout a 5-year period and may stay for up to 6 months every trip. When a visitor arrives at the border, immigration will record the length of their stay and note the passport’s expiration date.

If a citizen of South Korea wishes to extend their stay until the conclusion of their tour, they may do so while still in Canada as long as they do so at least 30 days beforehand.
